UNICEF, Nelson Mandela Foundation and Peter Krämer Foundation Kick Off Appeal to Expand Schools for Africa Initiative

UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Peter Krämer Foundation kicked off a new fundraising drive to raise $80 million to help Africa’s girls, orphans, children living in extreme poverty and other children go to get a quality education. They agreed to expand Schools for Africa, which has to date helped benefit 21 million children. The new phase aims to help children in Angola, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Attacks and Threats against Schools Must Stop, Says UNICEF

Children living in armed conflict face unprecedented threats to their lives and wellbeing. Today UNICEF said that the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict, sexual violence against children, killing and maiming of children, and recurrent attacks on hospitals and schools must stop. These grave violations are highlighted in the latest annual report of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict, issued today by Leila Zerrougui, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.

Child Labor Robbing Millions of Health, Education and Growth, UNICEF Says

On the World Day Against Child Labor, UNICEF today called attention to the millions of children who are engaged in some form of hazardous or exploitative work, usually at the expense of their health, education, overall wellbeing, and development. UNICEF estimates that around 150 million children between the ages of five and 14. According to the latest estimates from the International Labour Organization, 7.4 million children in the same age group are engaged in domestic work, which is disproportionately carried out by girls.

UNICEF: Too Many Children Dying of Malnutrition

UNICEF said today that too many children are dying of malnutrition, which is entirely preventable. Research just released by The Lancet medical journal stating that malnutrition contributes to 3.1 million under-five child deaths annually, or 45 percent of all deaths for that age group, underscores the urgent need to accelerate the fight against the condition.

Lucy Liu Visits Lebanon to Shine Spotlight on Plight of Syrian Refugee Children

UNICEF Ambassador Lucy Liu traveled to Lebanon with UNICEF to see first-hand the dire situation for Syrian children and their families who have fled a crisis that has left more than 70,000 people dead and nearly six million displaced from their homes. Liu visited makeshift settlements in the Bekaa region. Up to one million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in Lebanon, half of whom are children. The number of those arriving from Syria is growing, with more than 100,000 crossing the border each month.
