Circle K International holds a week-long event for UNICEF's WASH
Circle K International (CKI), a member of the Kiwanis International family of service leadership programs, is the world's largest student-led collegiate service organization with more than 13,000 members in 17 countries. Under their three tenents: Service, Leadership, and Fellowship, this program guides students to gain resume worthy skills, find lifetime friends and do community service that changes lives.
Chartered in 2013, the University of Houston (UH) chapter falls into the Texas-Oklahoma district of the organization, where members serve the community and raise funds for charities.
From March 25th-29th, 2019, members of Circle K International at the UH hosted a series of events that focused on raising awareness and funds for UNICEF’s WASH Project -- a campaign to improve Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in underdeveloped countries. In order to reach a wider audience, many student organizations were invited to attend and members were asked to invite friends along to the week’s events.
On Monday, UH CKI hosted WASH Tournament in which attendees were presented with an introduction of the WASH Project and competed in a WASH Family Feud trivia game for prizes.
On Tuesday, the WASH Bake Sale was conducted in which members sold homemade cookies to fundraise for WASH. In order to use this chance to raise awareness, little slips of paper with WASH facts and a link to their WASH GoFundMe was included. This way, students could become mindful of the WASH Project as they enjoyed their treats.
From the positive feedback received from our local community and wider, we had to bring WASH as an annual service project. We were able to inform many students about our initiative and the problems people living in underdeveloping countries face. I hope with everyone's combined efforts, we were able to lend a helping hand in making the world a better place to live in. Sammie Chen, 2019/20 UH CKI President
For Wednesday’s event, WASH For Thought, a table was set up, and they passed out over 60 water bottles with WASH labels so students could learn about WASH on the go.
Thursday’s event was Finding Water, a campus-wide scavenger hunt where handmade paper droplets were hidden in different water-related areas on campus. Each droplet held WASH facts and students that participated in our event were awarded prizes.
Because people in underdeveloped countries have to journey about 6K (3.7 mi) on a daily basis to obtain clean water, the week concluded with Walk for WASH, where members ran/walked the same distance in the campus recreational building.
