Advocacy Spotlight: Alejandra Colmenero
Alejandra Colmenero is a co-leader and founding member of the Denver Congressional Action Team (CAT), as well as a long-time supporter of UNICEF. She is also a reporter for Telemundo and a Program Coordinator at the Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy, and Research Organization (CLLARO)
She first became involved with UNICEF through the campus clubs initiative at her alma mater, Metropolitan State University of Denver. Around this time, Alejandra decided to lead a vegan lifestyle, a change that began her animal rights activism. Her extensive work in animal activism led her to discover UNICEF USA and begin advocating for UNICEF’s mission and goals. No matter what organization or cause, Alejandra is a passionate advocate: “To me, advocacy means using your voice on behalf of our brothers and sisters whose voice and plea is not heard. It means to know what you believe in and stick up for it.” And her advice to individuals who would like to begin their advocacy journey? “Remember that everyone started with zero experience! All you have to do is take the first step and remind yourself why you’re advocating. Know YOUR why.”

Among the numerous meetings with elected officials and events that Alejandra has attended on behalf of UNICEF, her fondest memory since joining the CAT was meeting Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), and Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) during Advocacy Day 2017. Although the meetings were unexpected, her breadth of knowledge and bright personality allowed her to make personal connections with the legislators. If she were ever given the opportunity to address all Members of Congress, she would remind them that as Americans, we all have a social, personal, and moral responsibility to help those in need. “We are so fortunate to simply live in the United States; we have the power to help.”
Alejandra’s passion is driven by her knowledge that UNICEF gives every child a chance to survive, thrive, and fulfill their true potential. “I see how my childhood has affected me in a positive way; hence, I want every child in the world to have the same opportunities I had. I want every child to be a child and to have the chance to thrive and live their full potential.”
The Denver CAT is fortunate to have Alejandra serve as one of their co-leaders. Her persistent work to empower the Denver CAT and bring positive change to her own community is admirable. It’s devoted leaders like Alejandra that prove that citizen-centric advocacy works!
