UNICEF's emergency operations center is closely watching a tropical storm in the Pacific today, as an estimated 3 million people in the path of Typhoon Megi (locally called Juan) brace for flooding and high winds.

Megi struck land in NE Luzon in the Philippines at 11:30 am this morning, local time. Hundreds of families were evacuated and schools and offices were closed. UNICEF has pre-positioned supplies including water kits, non-food items and medical kits, ready for dispatch if requested by the government. An assessment mission of the storm-damage is planned for Wednesday.

Though the storm is forecast to bypass the capital, Manila, Megi could pick up strength as it heads towards China. A little over one year ago, tropical storms in the Pacific battered the Philippines,Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia, leaving a trail of devastation.
