Sofia Carson

Sofia Carson has been a dedicated UNICEF Ambassador since 2020, using her platform to advocate for girls and amplify their voices through UNICEF's mission.

A tireless advocate for gender equality and girls' empowerment

An American singer, songwriter, actress and activist, Sofia began her entertainment career on Disney Channel. She starred in Disney Channel’s Original Movie Descendants and the Netflix film Purple Hearts, where she was also an executive producer, and wrote and performed the movie’s soundtrack.

Sofia has notably amplified her platform and talent of singing and entertainment to provide a platform for female voice and empowerment as seen through her hit song ‘LOUD’, released in 2022.

Sofia has dedicated her life to advocating for youth voices with a strong focus on girls’ empowerment and began working with UNICEF USA in 2017.

Traveling with UNICEF to Brazil and Tanzania, Sofia experienced UNICEF’s work in protecting children and families globally firsthand.

During her trip to Zanzibar and the Mbeya region of Tanzania in 2023, Sofia witnessed the work that UNICEF completes in partnership with the Tanzanian government to re-engage young people in school, aid them in reaching their full potential, and to provide communities with necessary tools to advocate for gender equality and girls’ empowerment. The trip was in commemoration of International Day of the Girl to raise awareness for the lack of girls' education and employment opportunities.

Sofia also visited the WasteX Labs that aids young people in developing solutions for improved waste management on the island of Zanzibar.

Sofia continues to utilize her platform to spread awareness for UNICEF’s work around the globe and shares multiple other ways of activism through advocating for gender equality and highlighting injustice around the world.

In 2019, Sofia wrote an op-ed expressing support for the Keeping Girls in School Act, which aimed to decrease barriers to education for young girls; the bill later passed the House of Representatives.

Sofia has also appeared on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, where she spoke about her work with UNICEF and how she uses her voice to help girls worldwide.

Sofia hosted the 2023 UNICEF Gala, where she was honored for her unwavering dedication to girls' empowerment and youth activism as the recipient of the 2023 Global Advocate of the Year Award, presented by the United Nations Correspondents Association.
