In the Bolivian Amazon, COVID-19 Vaccines Keep Communities Safe

Donate

The Yuqui community live deep in Bolivia's Amazon, but that hasn't kept them safe from communicable diseases like tuberculosis, which kills 10 percent of the population every year, according to UNICEF Bolivia's Keyla Ávila. Now the arrival of COVID-19 poses a new threat to this vulnerable indigenous group.

In the video below, Ávila explains how UNICEF works with partners in Bolivia to ensure that hard-to-reach communities like the Yuqui receive the health care services and lifesaving supplies they need, including COVID-19 vaccines.

On March 21, 2021, Bolivia received its first shipment of 228,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses through COVAX, a global effort between the Coalition for Promoting Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
