Young U-Reporters Drive Health and Hygiene Outreach in Haiti

With support from UNICEF and partners, young U-Reporters are bringing vital health, nutrition, immunization and hygiene information to some of the millions of people across Haiti whose lives have been upended by armed violence and natural disasters.

U-Reporters take action and make a difference

Information is power and everyone has a voice. No one is helpless.

That's the message young U-Reporters in Haiti are taking to heart and putting into practice, working to provide vital health and hygiene guidance to parents struggling to protect their children's health amid prolonged political turmoil and escalating armed violence.

U-Reporters reached almost 500,000 people in Haiti with essential public health messaging in 2024

With training from UNICEF and local partner CEDUCC, U-Reporters become powerful agents of change in their community. "We participate in awareness campaigns in street markets, in schools and in displacement sites," says Merline, a 20-year-old U-Reporter in Port-au-Prince. "We also accompany pregnant women and unvaccinated children to the health center."

In 2024, these motivated young people reached almost 500,000 people in Haiti with essential information on health, nutrition and immunization.

U-Reporters get results

"I am able to advise people confidently," Merline says. "People now wash their hands regularly; parents who haven’t yet vaccinated their children, bring their children to be vaccinated. Children who used to be violent have become calmer, and violence against children has significantly decreased. We consider these as real successes for us."
